Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common and prevalent condition in the United States. It is defined as kidney damage or a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) less than 60 mL/min/1.73m2) for three months or longer.4 If untreated, CKD can progress to end stage renal disease (ESRD), an irreversible and fatal condition only treated with dialysis or kidney transplant.

Why is physical activity or exercise so important? A lack of physical activity is one of the leading risk factors for death. People who are not routinely active have a 20%-30% higher risk of death than those who exercise regularly. Cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diabetes are all made worse by a lack of physical activity.
